Chef Peter Burbela is an acclaimed chef with experience as chef/owner of fine-dining restaurants in Maplewood, New Jersey and Vieques, Puerto Rico. His specialty is bringing together traditional flavor profiles from around the world. He is passionate about old world processes for charcuterie, smoking & curing foods, and blending them with modern techniques to create better, more consistent products. Burbela is a career-changer, receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology before following his passion into the food business. This engineering project management background has influenced much of his approach, combining his passion for great food with the preparatory processes & cross-utilization to maximize profits, which is so important for a successful business. The end result of his unique approach is wholesome food packed with flavor!
Chef Burbela’s wife, Courtney Maier Burbela, is a regular face behind the Burbelmaiers counter and regularly accepts compliments for Pete’s cooking. A graduate of Foxcroft School (Go HOUNDS!) & Lehigh University, Courtney has spent over 30 years in the art business both internally and as a private consultant. In that time, Courtney has compiled a string of successful branding & strategic partnerships within the New York art world. Courtney uses her business experience, combined with a love and understanding of great food, to design & implement the Burbelmaiers’ marketing program. She will also likely flash you a smile & help you choose a pie or two.
Courtney’s BFF from boarding school, Kendall Blythe, holds down Burbelmaiers’ finances and is Chef Pete’s favorite sous chef when she’s in the kitchen. A graduate of Foxcroft School (Go FOXES!) & the University of Maryland, Kendall brings more than 20 years of high-level operations experience focused on the design & delivery of cost-effective business & IT solutions. Working as a consultant primarily within the insurance sector, Kendall has built a strong reputation for integrating data, systems, processes & providers to deliver solutions. Her passion for processes shows up in her love of cooking & fine service. If it’s busy at Burbelmaiers, there a good chance that Kendall is helping to hold down the kitchen & front counter as well.
It’s simple story about our rather lengthy but romantic name. Bürbelmaiers is quite literally the marriage Pete Burbela and Courtney Maier (now Burbela). Years ago in an email about a brainstorming session for a small-town savoury pie shop, Burbela/Maier was mistyped as BurbelMaiers, and the rest is history.
Bürbelmaiers is our dream come true, and we didn’t get here alone. We want to acknowledge just a few of the people who have been instrumental in helping us make Bürbelmaiers happen.
Thank you to a small group of people who have been unwavering in their love and support in every way, shape and form, starting this journey with us and providing us everything we needed, when we needed it. Bürbelmaiers is because of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you:
